BMW M1 (E26) is a sports car made by German car manufacturerBMW from 1978 to 1981. M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 with theMotorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. The body was designed by Giugiaro, taking inspirationfrom the 1972 show car BMW Turbo. Originally, BMWcommissioned Lamborghini to work out the details of the carchassis, assemble prototypes and manufacture of vehicles, butLamborghini's financial position meant that BMW reassumedcontrol over the project in April 1978, after seven prototypes were built. Only 456 production M1s built, making it one of BMW's rarestmodels. The spirit lives on in the M1 and M5 M635Csi firstgeneration, who share the same engine (albeit slightly modified).
